JRR Tolkien: Designer of Worlds


Those who wend their way to Middle Earth often find an inviting home there, be they the counterculture hippies who embraced Tolkien’s books, the film fans who loved the epic scale of the movies or those – like me – who first discovered The Lord of the Rings through the atmospheric Radio 4 adaptation (Michael Hordern will always be my Gandalf and Ian Holm is forever my Frodo).

So as Game of Thrones begins its final series, here’s a timely reminder that George RR Martin doesn’t quite have the monopoly on fantasy worlds. Though academics do wonder here whether the blockbuster success of Tolkien’s stories means that the novels’ literary merits have been lost on that journey from page to screen.
