Review

Golf commentary is the best commentary. Period. Whether it’s the barrel-aged gravitas of the BBC’s Peter Alliss or the gentle concision of Sky’s Ewen Murray, there’s something about the whispered delivery that lulls you, even if you’ve never picked up a club in your life. Andrew Cotter too is the BBC’s leading light these days, a polymath popping up everywhere from Twickenham to Augusta via the Boat Race. At its best, golf commentary is more like incantation than reportage. One minute you’ll be distracted, admiring the flora lining Amen Corner – but then the commentator’s voice will drop. The air will go still, you’ll breathe in, lean in to the screen… and fall under their spell.

Summary

Eilidh Barbour presents live coverage of the fourth and final day from Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, where the year's first Major comes to its conclusion. Last year saw American Patrick Reed claim his first-ever Major title and a first prize of almost $2million. He carded his worst round of the tournament with one-under-par 71 and his compatriot Rickie Fowler made six shots on him, but was able to hold his nerve to par the final four holes and prevail by a single stroke. Jordan Spieth ensured Americans filled all of the top three places, while promising Spaniard Jon Rahm finished in fourth. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy started the day in second place as he bid to complete a career Grand Slam, but carded a disappointing 74 and ended up in joint-fifth with a score of nine-under-par, though that still made him the highest-placed British finisher. Commentary comes from Andrew Cotter, Peter Alliss, Paul Azinger and Ken Brown.
