Review

“All I’ve been told is I have to meet Karen in a village somewhere out here,” says Ben. Sounds like a tall order, seeing as he’s driving through the middle of the Sahara desert.

Like many of Ben’s new-lifers, Karen has a serene air about her. She runs an artists’ retreat in Morocco, where the amber sunlight must have been manna from heaven for the cameraperson – cascading through slits in the windows, and illuminating the shimmering drapery of dunes outside. It’s not all about sipping tea and admiring the view for Karen, though: the work’s hard, but the rewards are huge. “It’s so beautiful to watch the transformation people go through,” she says of her guests.

Summary

Ben meets former Melbourne-based festival director Karen, who set up a three-acre artists' retreat in the heart of the Sahara. The project required that she learn centuries-old techniques - and the art of patience. Ben learns the importance of community, and how one man in particular was pivotal to Karen's realisation of a new life in the wild. During the course of his stay, Ben helps add a 150kg bamboo roof to Karen's latest building project and finds time to trek into the desert with camels, visit the local market and climb sand dunes.
