Celebrity Painting Challenge

Series 1 - Episode 1

Review

Be warned. This programme includes footage of a naked Keith Allen. Pixellation comes to his (and our) rescue but there’s still quite a lot of Allen on display, as he acts as model in the life-drawing class that kicks off the celebrity art contest.

Capturing Allen’s curves are some well-cast celebs including Jane Seymour, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Josie d’Arby and Phil Tufnell. “Knees are difficult, en’t they?” frets Phil, while Laurence, who is more used to painting from his own imagination, groans, “I’d forgotten how hard this is.”

The results are a mixed bag, but when the artists turn to a subject they know and love – themselves – the self-portraits they paint are fascinating. Phil does a kind of Picasso pastiche, while Laurence makes himself into a dashing “21st-century musketeer”. Mariella Frostrup hosts a show that – so far – has a fun and energy that the “civilian” version never quite managed.

Summary

Mariella Frostrup hosts this spin-off of The Big Painting Challenge, which sees six famous faces pick up a paintbrush to put their art skills to the test. The hopefuls are actress Jane Seymour, cricketer-turned-broadcaster Phil Tufnell, model and DJ Amber Le Bon, presenter Josie D'Arby, designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and singer George Shelley. First up they tackle the human form, which involves self-portraits and capturing a nude Keith Allen on canvas.
