Review

Brain surgery while you’re awake. That’s a prospect to strike fear into the bravest of hearts. But Cameron, 20, must be conscious while consultant neurosurgeon Ismail Ughratdar attempts to remove his brain tumour so that his ability to speak isn’t damaged by the operation. It’s remarkable watching speech therapist Becky Marr constantly communicating with Cameron while “Ish” is cutting away inside his skull, stopping the minute she reports a speech defect.

In another operating theatre within Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, cardiac surgeon Jorge Mascaro is replacing 71-year-old Maggie’s aorta – it’s a massive, blood-drenched, ten-hour procedure that’s horribly tense at times.

The skill and dedication of these surgeons is awe-inspiring, yet both modestly credit the support of their teams with much of their success.

Summary

Cameras return to the operating theatres of Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and reveal what goes on during procedures that test the limits of what is scientifically possible. In this episode, one of the QE's leading consultant neurosurgeons, Ismail Ughratdar, performs brain surgery on 20-year-old Cameron, while consultant cardiac surgeon Jorge Mascaro also takes on a complex operation where the slightest error can mean the difference between life and death.
