Review

The self-portraits that introduce this episode’s competitors are typically, and wonderfully, diverse: everything from “Victorian gem” to “passport photo”. And their paintings for the heat are equally multi-disciplinary. A fine arts graduate who works in an ice-cream shop likes to paint the nose first; a teacher at Edinburgh spends a lot of time looking and thinking.

This week’s truism is that once you’ve found the likeness, you have to hang on to it – but as we’ve seen previously, likeness isn’t everything to our judges. A fascinating round, and this Saturday-evening run on Channel 4 has been an excellent opportunity for non-Sky-types to access their classy show.

Summary

Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell host the painting challenge, as nine more contestants paint celebrity sitters Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Adrian Lester and Nitin Sawhney. The contestants have just four hours to complete their portrait, before the judges decide who to send through to the next round of the competition.
