Midsomer Murders

Death of the Small Coppers

Series 20 - Episode 2 Death of the Small Coppers

It appears as though ITV is merely plugging a fortnight’s hole in the schedules with these latest episodes. After this, we’re going to have to wait until later in the year to catch the rest of series 20, which feels like a swizz seeing as US viewers first got to see it last May.

So enjoy the playfully macabre plotlines while you can – this episode begins with a butterfly collector getting pinned to the wall of his summerhouse with an industrial drill bit. Barnaby, though, takes grisly sights in his stride and is soon calmly linking the death to an elite IQ society headed up by the ruthless Grady Palmerston (Peter Egan, oozing smarm).

Joining Egan on guest-starring duties is Shakespeare & Hathaway’s Mark Benton, while Ann Eleonora Jørgensen returns as Birgitte Poulsen, the Danish detective who Barnaby met when Midsomer Murders visited Copenhagen in 2014.

The headmaster of a local school is murdered, his body found pinned to the wall in the manner of his own butterfly collection. The dead man was a member of a mysterious international club for geniuses, which are currently testing the school's pupils for possible new recruits. Barnaby and Winter investigate the secretive organisation, which has proven controversial in the local area, but also uncover the possibility of a connection between the killing and the impact of pesticides on a rare species of butterfly.
