Around the World by Train with Tony Robinson

India & Burma

Series 1 - Episode 2 India & Burma

The best scene in this leg of Tony Robinson’s journey happens unplanned, as he stumbles on an early-morning Buddhist procession in Burma. In the old religious centre of Bagan there’s a fabulously blingy parade as young boys who are about to become Buddhist novices ride through the streets in decorated carriages, on horseback or on elephants – and all wearing costumes so vivid they’ll test the colour settings on your TV.

It’s a fabulous sight in what is otherwise a pleasant meander through Delhi, Darjeeling and Mandalay – where Robinson heads to a bazaar that, with no thought for health and safety, takes place right on the railway tracks.

The actor travels across India and Burma, beginning in Delhi, where he visits one of the city's oldest markets, before taking a ride on the Himalayan Mountain Railway and being taught the proper way to imbibe at the Glenburn Tea Estate. He then crosses the Bay of Bengal into Burma, trying his hand at pottery and learning about toddy palm wine, finishing at the ancient city of Bagan.
