Review

Six nations, three matches, one decisive afternoon. Rugby can be a complicated sport, but this tournament at least is beautiful in its simplicity. Every breakdown, every line break, slinging pass or kick ahead adds to the momentum of the final day. With barely enough time between games to draw breath, it’s best just to lie back and let the current carry you.

Italy v France (k/o 12.30pm ITV) admittedly is the match to endure, the meandering stream before the wild rapids of Wales v Ireland (k/o 2.45pm, BBC). This is the final time that coaches Warren Gatland and Joe Schmidt will lead their sides in the Six Nations; will either man earn the fairy-tale ending? Even at this point the tide could turn, however: depending on what’s gone before, the result of England v Scotland (k/o 5pm ITV) could mean nothing – or everything.

Summary

Wales v Ireland (Kick-off 2.45pm). John Inverdale presents all the action from both teams' fifth and final match of the championship, held at the Principality Stadium. The fixture is sandwiched between Italy's lunchtime meeting with France and the early-evening clash between England and Scotland, and Wales will be hoping for a repeat of their victory the last time Ireland visited Cardiff two years ago. Two tries from winger George North led Warren Gatland's home side to a 22-9 triumph on that occasion.
