Get your debit cards out because there’s something for every TV taste in this year’s Comic Relief. Hosted by a variety of presenters, including Lenny Henry, Paddy McGuinness, Emma Willis, Romesh Ranganathan, Rob Beckett, Alesha Dixon, Clara Amfo, Zoe Ball, Joe Sugg and David Tennant, Red Nose Day brings a nostalgia-fest that’ll hurl you back to 1994.
The original cast of Four Weddings and a Funeral star in a mini-sequel set years later where Charles and Carrie (Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell) are seeing their daughter walk down the aisle. Radio Times was on set and can report that from Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling Father Gerald to Anna Chancellor’s love-struck Duckface, as well as some very famous guests, the cast induces that heart-bursting joy that Richard Curtis is so well known for.
There are also high hopes for Jennifer Saunders’s spoof of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, starring Gemma Arterton, Carey Mulligan, Tom Hollander, Miranda Hart, Sue Perkins and more. After all, the 2009 Red Nose Day Mamma Mia! sketch was a comedy dream, and the latest film provides plenty of glorious moments to parody. Talking of parodies, Alan Partridge is getting involved in an uncharacteristically selfless cause as he tries, awkwardly and badly one imagines, to form a giant conga line in less than three minutes to raise money for Comic Relief.
For quiz fans, University Challenge gets a Comic Relief makeover as David Baddiel puts the brains of Martin Freeman, Rob Rinder, Vick Hope and others to the test. Onto more (or less) serious stuff, those thrilled by Bodyguard, Britain’s most-watched drama since 2008, might enjoy Richard Madden returning as David Budd on a new, slightly less pressurised assignment.
Lenny Henry, Emma Willis, Paddy McGuinness, David Tennant, Zoe Ball, Romesh Ranganathan and Alesha Dixon introduce a night of fundraising fun and games, all to raise money for the Red Nose charity, which works to change the lives of vulnerable people and communities both in the UK and abroad. Highlights include Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson and many of the cast of 1994 smash-hit rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral, reuniting for a one-off special, entitled One Red Nose Day and a Wedding. Plus, Richard Madden returns as DS David Budd in a very special episode of Bodyguard, Freddie Flintoff drives Robbie Savage mad at the Top Gear test track and the cast of Only Fools & Horses: The Musical give a show-stopping performance.
