Review

It’s the end of February in Scotland and spring is around the corner. Or is it? Just as our various Scottish farmers think that way, a bitter snowstorm blows in. "The Beast from the East" is a pain for farmers but handy for the programme, which gets a boost from the kind of drama – trapped sheep, hypothermic buffalo – it could perhaps use more of.

Except, drama isn’t really the point: this series is about the working rhythms of rural life, a lot of which seem to involve vets sticking their arms where the sun don’t shine. That and sheep shearing, which leaves the Irvines’ Valais blackface sheep – who look daft at the best of times – like something out of Dr Seuss.

Summary

Kirsty and Aimee gather the flock in from St Ninian's Isle, and inspectors arrive to check Raymond and Johnny's subsidy claim. Meanwhile, Lynn and Sandra host their first workshop at the croft, and 'the Beast from the East' wreaks havoc on Stevie's buffalo farm.
