Review

This latest series of Endeavour has had an air of seamy finality to it, like a cigarette that’s been smoked right down to the filter and stained the wall nicotine brown. Everyone seems tainted by corruption, grief or regret and the moral compass that once guided Morse and Thursday’s partnership appears to have been smashed underfoot. When we last saw Fred, he was even taking a paper bag stuffed with banknotes from bent cop Ronnie Box. So it’s no wonder that the Cowley old guard are now excluding him and Morse is shaking his head in disgust and saying, “I barely recognise you.”

The big questions here are: can Thursday be redeemed? And will he opt to make a stand or spend the rest of his days consumed by recriminations? As the criminal conspiracy in Oxford comes into focus, loyalties are put to the test in a flinty, hard-edged showdown.

Summary

The detective investigates the murder of a librarian, and suspicion immediately falls on two professors connected to each other by a seemingly innocent college bequest. As Endeavour and Thursday dig deeper, they uncover a web of professional and personal rivalries, and a series of broken promises with a grim connection to the Holocaust. There are further casualties in the recent series of heroin-related deaths, and Strange is convinced that a larger criminal conspiracy is at work as evidence emerges of a link to the murder of George Fancy.
