Review

For the past six years, Sky Arts subscribers have been able to enjoy one of the most delightful talent shows on TV, and now Channel 4 is serving up repeats as a delicious family tea-time treat. Each week a group of artists arrives at the Wallace Collection in London, to capture the likenesses of three celebrity sitters in just four hours.

The simple pleasure of watching a portrait emerge is complemented by hosts Joan Bakewell and Stephen Mangan’s winning charm and silly jokes, while judges Kate Bryan, Kathleen Soriano and Tai-Shan Schierenberg’s excellent half-time analysis is the cherry on top, as they discuss whose work is teetering between brilliance and disaster.

It’s all wonderfully good-natured, and when the sitters get to see their portraits, there are exclamations of, “Oh, wow!” You’ll feel the same after discovering this gem.
