Review

The Bee has buzzed back after a long gap – the last series was in 2016. There’s one major change: Claudia Winkleman is replaced as presenter, time-keeper and cheerleader by comedian Joe Lycett, but everything else remains the same.

Judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young cast their gimlet eyes over the efforts of ten talented amateur sewing enthusiasts. As ever with challenge shows like this, time isn’t always on everyone’s side, but some glorious creations are still made in that well-stocked haberdashery room.

There are bumps along the way. The transformation challenge – jazzing up a dreary denim outfit – turns brings a garment that Grant calls “dangerously unwearable” (it’s off the shoulder, off the bust, off everything). And the final, made-to-measure challenge with real models produces an outfit described by Grant as “a little hungry in the bum”. You’ll see what he means.

Summary

The contest returns with new host Joe Lycett, and Patrick Grant and Esme Young passing judgement once more. The first pattern challenge is a Dior-inspired `wiggle dress' designed to hug the female form. Contestants also have to transform three second-hand items of denim clothing into a single, stylish new garment, and the final task involves a made-to-measure jumpsuit.
