There’s nothing like
Cold Feet
on television at the moment, a drama that’s not afraid to twist our emotions, though not in any gratuitous way, as the friends at its heart navigate the minefields of middle-class middle-age in a succession of lovely kitchens, bars and restaurants.
Jen (Fay Ripley) bridles against her husband Pete’s efforts to wrap her in cotton wool as she undergoes her first chemotherapy treatment, while David (Robert Bathurst), penniless and alone, lives in an airport, riding the escalators and pretending to be en route to somewhere, anywhere, as his once comfortable life dissolves around him.
Then there’s Karen and Adam, both still preoccupied by that kiss. Karen seems blasé while Adam obsesses, even though he has a new girlfriend, Caitlin (Eve Myles). There’s a tremendously funny scene with Myles when Caitlin realises she doesn’t have Adam’s full attention.
Summary
Adam is enjoying his new relationship, but he is unable to help feeling jealous when Karen's head is turned by Dan the benevolent vicar. Jenny starts chemotherapy and gets a new lease of life when her cancer buddy Charlie encourages her to join the hospital choir, while Pete finds himself in a dilemma when Chloe - terrified her mum is going to die - asks him to formally adopt her. Homeless David takes refuge at the airport, but a chance encounter with ex-wife Robyn forces him to admit his plight.
