Review

It’s a brave contestant who airily announces they’ve been cooking since they were knee-high to a hob. Setting yourself up like that often ends up with egg on the face. But although that is what happens to a couple of the seven cooks in the first round, the series gets off to a great start. John Torode and Gregg Wallace certainly have no problem picking four to go through to the next challenge (cooking for last year’s finalists, a gently encouraging trio).

There are some experimental flavour combinations that concern both the judges and a Danish-inspired cold dessert “soup” that Torode admits both intrigues and unnerves him. One courageous female cook serves chocolate fondant (which is up there with panna cotta and soufflé in a “triangle of evil” according to 2018 winner Kenny Tutt). But then, we’re told, “the girls rock” this series.

Summary

John Torode and Gregg Wallace host the cookery competition, as a new batch of contestants are put through gruelling culinary challenges to test not just their skills, but also their knowledge of food and ability to cope in a professional kitchen. The first seven hopefuls need to pull out all the stops to prove to John and Gregg that they have the potential to rise above the rest and become MasterChef 2019 Champion.
