Review

It’s 1969, there’s Led Zeppelin on the soundtrack and Morse has a moustache and a uniform. Unthinkably he’s no longer a detective, he’s a sergeant with stripes and a dinky blue-and-white Morris Minor police car.

Morse (Shaun Evans) is stationed in the middle of nowhere, dealing with reports of stolen horses and church burglaries. His old boss, Fred Thursday, is at the shiny new Thames Valley force HQ, demoted after the murder of young police officer George Fancy at the end of the last series, and bagman to a thug of a DCI.

But the old partners are thrown together when a young girl is found dead in a cornfield, a corona of flowers arranged neatly in her hair, and the inquiry hurls Fred into his past and a harrowing old case.

It’s a perfectly pitched, elegiac, sad and at times very dark episode from writer Russell Lewis.

Summary

New series. The detective has been assigned to a quiet rural area in 1969, and finds himself back in uniform. However, he is reunited with his former CID colleagues when he discovers the body of a missing schoolgirl. Endeavour quickly finds a likely suspect, and is offered the chance to regain his lost status by making an arrest - but Thursday convinces him the man is innocent.
