Series 4 - Episode 5

While it’s hard not to miss James Norton’s Sidney, new vicar Will (Tom Brittney) gets a lot more fleshed out in this episode as he and Geordie take a trip to his family pile, revealing a darker background than we might expect for the beaming priest.

Will’s aristocratic father (Inspector Lynley’s Nathaniel Parker) is a violent bully, his mother downtrodden – and when a family dinner turns criminal and Geordie steps in, even more cracks begin to show in the Davenport household.

There’s not even any respite back at the vicarage, where Leonard and Mrs C’s estrangement continues and Will chafes under the expectations of his new role, all leading to a genuinely shocking conclusion.

Will is settling into the new routines of his life in Grantchester when an unexpected phone call reveals his father has got himself into some trouble, so he asks Geordie for his help. Will hasn't been home in a while, running from a past he wants to forget, but he cannot outrun his roots for ever and when one vicious beating leads to a grisly murder at a sprawling ancestral home, scandal threatens to engulf the Davenport family - suggesting life may never be the same for Will again. Jemma Redgrave and Nathaniel Parker guest star, alongside Robson Green and Tom Brittney.
