Review

“Secret” is pushing it a bit, when the first episode of comedian and Strictly star Susan Calman’s Scottish travelogue encompasses Edinburgh Castle, the Forth Bridge and the Chariots of Fire beach at St Andrews. Still, Calman is nothing if not enthusiastic, reflecting that she’s rarely seen Edinburgh outside the Festival so is happy to explore the city with fresh eyes. She doesn’t even flinch while the snow whirls around her on a “beautiful spring day” at the castle as she waits to hear the famous one o’clock gun.

In Fife she proves herself a dab hand at hickory golf (I found myself wistfully thinking they should bring back Pro-Celebrity Golf) and frying fish in an award-winning chip shop, while one musical interlude south of the capital brings tears to her eyes. And when it’s not sleeting horizontally (an Edinburgh speciality), the country looks simply gorgeous.

Summary

Comedian Susan Calman takes a light-hearted jaunt around her homeland to uncover the secrets behind some of Scotland's most famous locations. She begins by visiting Edinburgh and the east coast, where she learns all about the firing of the one o'clock gun at the city's iconic castle, as well as the hiding place of Scotland's crown jewels. The fascinating stories continue below ground, as Susan delves into the ghostly history of Edinburgh's criminal past. Then, in lighter mode, she heads to St Andrews to try out a charming variation of the game of golf.
