Review

Now this is a rarity: a two-part case. And here’s something even more unusual: there are just three photos of suspects on the board at the station. Why? Because Florence (Joséphine Jobert) is vouching for fiancé Patrice, even though he’s best mates with the victim’s boyfriend. But is she being too hasty in discounting her fella from the inquiry? Well, there won’t be any spoilers here, though what I will say is that the mystery – which centres around the killing of a festival queen – allows for a bit more soul-searching than usual.

As for why it’s spread out over a couple of episodes, actress Shyko Amos (who’s been a breath of fresh air as newbie Ruby) has already said that it’s because the show wanted to go “really intense” and “dark”. And while the result isn’t exactly Law & Order: Saint Marie, there is a terrific “To be Continued” that’ll leave you craving next week’s conclusion.

Summary

In the first of a two-part story, a fishing community is excited about the arrival of their festival queen for an annual celebration, but when her boat arrives with only her dead body on board, DI Mooney is left, yet again, with a baffling mystery to solve. What could a missing loaf of bread have to do with the crime? Meanwhile, Florence and Patrice look forward to their wedding, which is only a week away, but a huge strain is put on their relationship when the groom is drawn into the murder case as a former employer and long-time friend of the victim.
