Series 4 - Episode 4

It’s a thoroughly cheerless visit to the Cambridge countryside this week. There are always dark currents in this drama but now they seem to have washed over the whole thing, bathing the characters in gloom. Even new vicar “Call me Will” Davenport, with his 150-watt smile, gets dragged down.

“Is it always like this?” he wonders aloud, as tension at the vicarage becomes suffocating. Well no, there are usually shafts of sunlight, but Leonard and Mrs Chapman have reached a terrible impasse and Geordie’s wife is in agonies after the encounter with her predatory work colleague. A murder case involving a weirdly intense farming family completes the picture.

A relaxed Will is installed as the new vicar, though is only just back at the vicarage when Geordie drops by requesting his help. Initially reluctant to be drawn in, Will is swayed when he learns that the matter concerns Adam, a profoundly deaf boy from a devout family, whose mother has recently died following a fall. Adam's father thinks his son was responsible and the truth needs uncovering to help the family heal. Will's own troubled past threatens to colour his view of the case - and Geordie realises his new friend has demons of his own. Drama, starring Robson Green and Tom Brittney.
