Review

In a series first shown last year, Lucy Worsley looks across the Atlantic to challenge America’s fondly held historical beliefs.

She’s at Fourth of July celebrations in Philadelphia before moving to Boston where, supposedly, the American Revolution began with the so-called tea party. Worsley has other ideas: it wasn’t called a “tea party”, for starters – that’s a name it acquired when it was reinvented 50 years later.

Worsley goes on to unpick the accepted version of events, of plucky underdogs taking on the might of a distant ruling power.

Summary

Lucy explores how American history has been mythologised and manipulated by generations of politicians, writers and protesters. She begins by examining the American Revolution - a David-and-Goliath battle of men with high ideals taking on the might of the British Empire. But how much of America's founding story is based on fact?
