Review

Vera’s temper is volcanic when she comes up against a case that really gets underneath her skin; a teenage boy is found stabbed to death in the boatyard of a quiet seaside town. He’d travelled there from Newcastle after bolting from his care home, and she must find out why.

The answer leads Vera and her little team into a desperately dark and seedy underworld full of lost souls and vulnerable young men and women. For the squeamish among you (and I mean ME) there are a number of Trainspotting-type shots of fetid toilets, so prepare to look away.

It’s an unusual case for Vera (Brenda Blethyn) who doesn’t tend to collide with raw and very current horrors – like the practice of “cuckooing” where a drugs gang takes over the home of a vulnerable addict, and “county lines” drug dealing.

Summary

The detective investigates the discovery of an unidentified teenage boy's body in a coastal town's shipyard, who is revealed to be listed as a missing person, having absconded from the care of his support worker. Vera discovers that the quiet community where he was found is plagued by a serious drugs problem - despite the fact that the only known dealer in the area has turned his back on crime. The victim could be the answer to the mystery, but a wall of silence surrounds his death. Mark Addy guest stars.
