Review

It’s a pleasant surprise to see Sky Arts featuring Aussie indie underdogs the Go-Betweens on prime-time Saturday night. In the dozen or so years of their existence, the band never charted higher than 80 in the UK, and even their top hit in their home country only peaked at 68.

The issue here is that songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan were easily capable of writing saleable melodies (the 1983 single Cattle and Cane, in particular, is an underground classic). Were they just too ordinary-looking to qualify as rock gods? Who knows? But the result is a superb film about how the Go-Betweens became one of those bands whose acclaim far outstripped their success.
