Review

Good old Rev Sidney Chambers. In times of strife and division we can take a trip back to his idyllic Cambridge parish to inhale the 1950s loveliness for a few moments – before the 1950s awfulness lands heavily, with another murder.

This time, though, it’s different. Sidney (James Norton) has always been a restless soul, but now more than ever he is chafing against the starched collars and starchy morals of his life.

He keeps putting himself in harm’s way: “You’ve got to stop doing this – no more heroics,” Geordie (Robson Green) begs him. But when a group of civil rights campaigners from Alabama arrive on a fundraising tour, it’s clear their struggle speaks to Sidney in a way organising the village fête never will.

Fans will know that Norton is leaving the series and tonight’s opener lays the groundwork for his replacement. It also establishes what – or who – might tempt him away.

Summary

The year 1956 finds jazz-loving clergyman Sidney Chambers attending a talk by Reverend Nathaniel Todd, a member of the formative US civil rights movement. During the event, protestors disrupt the speech and release fireworks, causing the audience to panic. In the chaos, Todd's son Charles is stabbed and killed by an unseen assailant. The murder sees racial tensions spike and Geordie Keating is called in to investigate. Things are further complicated when Sidney finds himself drawn to passionate young activist, and their tentative romance faces pressure from all sides. Robson Greene stars, with James Norton, Tessa Peake-Jones, Samuel West and Paterson Joseph.
