Donovan & the Beatles In India

Donovan & the Beatles In India

It was 50 years ago today (more or less), when the Beatles and other high-profile meditators visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram on the banks of the Ganges. Donovan was among them, and his recollections of the time form an invaluable cultural artefact.

Alas, the retreat wasn’t the voyage of enlightenment its protagonists expected. Ringo brought along a suitcase of baked beans because the food didn’t agree with him, while Harrison and Lennon left amid allegations that the Maharishi tried to get off with Mia Farrow. The trip didn’t blunt the Beatles’ creativity, though: some of the top tunes on The White Album were inspired by it.

In 1968 the Beatles visited India, where they discovered meditation and wrote over two dozen songs that were included in the White Album, Abbey Road and later solo albums. In this documentary, folk singer Donovan - who was the ringleader of the trip - retraces the journey he and the Fab Four took to shine a light on a world of peace, love and incredible creativity.
