Review

Gifted young ice skater Jayne Torvill yearns to blossom. She knows she can, she just needs the right male partner out there on the rink. “I want to express myself!” she tells her parents. But they don’t quite get it. “Why? What have you got to express?” wonders her kindly mum, being accidentally withering.

William Ivory’s winning, rather sweet 2018 biographical drama watches the young Jayne and Chris (Poppy Lee Friar and Will Tudor, who are terrific) take their first steps on to the municipal rink in their home town of Nottingham and follows them to the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics.

We get some idea of that once-in-a-lifetime alchemy that brought two driven talents together to produce those four beautiful minutes when the world stood still to watch the magical, gold-medal-winning Boléro routine.

I don’t mind admitting, I cried at the end.

Summary

One-off drama following Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's humble beginnings and family life in Nottingham, and how they came together to forge an ice-dancing partnership that would see them secure their place in sporting history with 12 perfect 6.0s at the 1984 Winter Olympics for their famous Bolero routine.
