Review

Lee Mack’s sitcom ought to be well suited to a live episode. Yes, it moves to a carefully worked rhythm of set-ups and punchlines, such that a syllable out of place will spoil a gag – it’s not like, say, Mrs Brown’s Boys, a theatrical caper with unrehearsed flab proudly spilling over the sides. But Not Going Out is still a traditional comedy on a flat domestic stage set, with the audience laughter forming a key part of that sitcom rat-a-tat. The relationship between performers and crowd will be thrillingly intensified as this episode plays out – and if, as we’re all secretly hoping will happen, it goes wrong, Mack can always ad lib.

The episode, or at least the planned version of it, sees Lee and Lucy (Sally Bretton) struggle to organise a fundraising variety show for their children’s school.

Summary

Lee and Lucy are strong-armed into organising a Christmas variety show to raise money for their children's school. However, things prove to be far from plain sailing, as quality acts are worryingly thin on the ground and an animal impersonator as the only confirmed performer. Who can the duo turn to - surely not Toby and uptight wife Anna? With raw egg-juggling and some knife throwing for good measure, what could possibly go wrong - especially in a live instalment of this award-winning sitcom from 2018? Lee Mack, Sally Bretton, Hugh Dennis and Abigail Cruttenden star.
