Review

ight from the Rorschach inkblot opening titles, this fine American drama chills and disturbs. The story of Cora, a young mother who has murdered a total stranger during a family day trip to a lake, is fractured and hallucinatory, with a nightmarish miasma that infuses every minute.

Cora (Jessica Biel, who is excellent) is horribly damaged after a dreadful upbringing at the mercy of a cruel, religious zealot mother – but were there other, darker, more sexually charged reasons that she became a killer?

Cop Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman, so good as a nice guy with a soul full of shadows) digs deep into Cora’s life, convinced that she’s holding back the full horrors of her past. “Someone, somewhere, did this to you,” he insists to the broken young woman.

There are flashbacks to Cora’s growing up in a hard house with a sick sister, but these are as seamless as they are shocking.

Summary

Ambrose unearths a startling secret about Cora that changes the course of the investigation, while Cora begs Mason to bring Laine to visit her.
