Review

It’s hard not to suspect the BBC has had its pop-doc budget slashed. Clipshows, and celebrities watching clipshows, seem to have replaced dogged detective work and in-depth interviews. The new formula is perfectly entertaining in itself, but just not the same. No matter: time to don sequinned shirts and apply eyeshadow and enjoy the sci-fi stylings of Roxy Music, then watch the slow transition of its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry into end-of-the-party crooner.

Supergrass’s Gaz Coombes, actor Sadie Frost and Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder are among those to pay homage at the altar of glam. But do we – and does the subject – deserve More Than This?

Summary

Formed in 1971, Roxy Music was the brain child of art student Bryan Ferry. Pioneers of glam, their outlandish fashion sense, songwriting and use of electronics created a glorious package. Style is one thing, but the substance was reflected in a catalogue of classic songs - combined they create an enduring legacy which is celebrated in a golden hour of their greatest hits as selected by such well-known faces as Sadie Frost, Glenn Gregory, Martyn Ware, Gaz Coombes, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Shaun Ryder, Alan McGee and Ana Matronic.
