Review

“If you’re a female meerkat, you’re a baby-making machine,” Chester Zoo’s Kirsten tells us. But she’s concerned about mum Huskie’s last litter. There was only one pup – Junior – and although he’s a feisty little thing he’s no match for his slightly older, but very boisterous, siblings. Junior is not developing as he should, although the mob – as a gang of meerkats is called – isn’t that bothered. “It’s probably more of a blow to us than to them, to be honest,” says Kirsten.

Over in the Humboldt penguin enclosure, new arrival Flounder is being a slippery character, while another zoo newcomer, Koda the red panda, gets off to a frosty start with his potential mate Nima.

Keeper Pete is hopeful that they will bond but the signs aren’t looking good: “I don’t know what he can do to make an impression on Nima. I mean we struggle,” he shrugs.

Summary

Young meerkat parents Huskie and Beagle have a new baby, Junior, but keepers have to step in when he falls gravely ill. Meanwhile, red panda Nima, who lost her partner last year, meets a new mate, Koda, but the pair do not get off to the best start, and in the penguin pool, a new male called Flounder arrives.
