Review

Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether Aine is drowning rather than waving. She constructs a shell made entirely of terrible jokes and wisecracks as she battles her overwhelming feelings of unhappiness. She’s cripplingly lonely, an Irishwoman in London with few friends and just her sister Shona to lean on.

But this is a likeable comedy drama from writer and star Aisling Bea – even if Aine threatens to become completely overwhelming, you’ll still be on her side. She has a big heart, too, which leads her into trouble. Tonight she takes a Bulgarian student from her English language group to hospital after he suffers what she thinks is a racist attack.

And maybe things are looking up elsewhere, as Aine is offered a job tutoring a young French boy who’s moved to London to live with the father he barely knows (played by Tobias Menzies).

Summary

Aine is interviewed for a private tutoring job teaching English to a young French boy called Etienne, who has recently lost his mother and finds himself living in London with his reserved father Richard, whom he barely knows. Unfortunately, when Aine insists on taking a Bulgarian student to hospital, she's at risk of missing her first lesson with Etienne and badly letting him down, while Shona arranges a meeting with Charlotte to pitch her the idea for a Women's Financial Networking event.
