Review

Tension hangs heavy at a very uncomfortable seaside house party after Bob Fosse checks himself out of a psychiatric clinic. His closest friends, playwright Neil Simon and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky, are there, along with Fosse’s new and very young girlfriend, Ann.

Of course, no show is complete without Gwen Verdon, who turns up with her callow and dull new boyfriend as she raves to Fosse about Chicago – at last they have a Broadway theatre; all they have to do is get the songs written, find a cast and get on stage!

But the atmosphere shatters when Fosse (Sam Rockwell) insists that he’s making a film with Duston Hoffman about the “comedian” Lenny Bruce or, as Verdon (Michelle Williams) scoffs “an art film about a drug addict”. Fosse has no interest in Chicago.

It’s a good, brittle episode that mines the strain at the heart of their relationship.

Summary

As the high summer of 1973 ebbs away, Bob and girlfriend Ann Reinking hire a weekend house in the country to help comfort the recently bereaved Neil Simon. Also invited are Gwen and her boyfriend Ron. Ann is concerned that Gwen won't like her, but Bob says Gwen will be on her best behaviour for Neil. Gwen proves to be in buoyant mood, excited to announce a theatre has been secured for their project of Chicago, but Bob is hesitant claiming he has a lot of work on with the Lenny script. Thus, new tensions emerge. Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams star.
