Review

Kathy Burke is concerned she’s going to sound like a “jealous old hag” as she effs and blinds her way through this terrific doc about women’s obsession with conforming to a fixed idea of beauty. But what she’s really worried about is the way women of the Instagram generation are so insecure about their image. “I wish they’d realise it’s not the be-all and end-all,” she says, having talked to Love Island’s Megan Barton-Hanson (who spent £40K on cosmetic surgery), a lovely-looking young woman getting a boob job and, to get a different perspective, Sue Tilley, who was Lucien Freud’s famously large nude model.

Kathy is increasingly foul-mouthed as she gets more and more appalled by what she calls the tyranny of beauty and how the pressure of social media means women aren’t happy unless they’re “perfect”. Which, at the very least, means photoshopping and filtering your selfies, but often also means spending a fortune on surgery.

“If I had a daughter who was 20 and looked like me, could you imagine the abuse she would get?” she rants.
