Catch-22

Series 1 - Episode 4

Review

Yossarian’s mind is newly focused after the horrors he witnessed last week. He needs to get out of the air force, right now. As the barmy Colonel Cathcart increases the number of flying missions, Yossarian hits on a radical new plan – he will fly his remaining 11 missions as fast as possible. Just get them all out of the way, and then he can be discharged and go home.

In a thrilling, febrile episode directed by Catch-22’s executive producer and occasional star, George Clooney, Yossarian must first complete a kind of spiv’s odyssey at the behest of the wheeler dealer, Milo Minderbinder. It involves, variously, goats, artichokes, parrots and Yossarian (Christopher Abbott, who is tremendous as the everyman anti-hero) passing himself off as Nelson Rockefeller.

By now this smart adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel has a life of its own - it’s intelligent, funny and, frequently, as in tonight’s closing moments, devastating.
