Review

Night terrors, stress, sleep apnoea, heavy meals and excess alcohol, too much late-night screen time: there are many reasons why people don’t sleep well. And if you’re one of the estimated 16 million adults in this country who say they have insomnia or the 32 million who regularly suffer from disrupted sleep, you’ll know how devastating it can be. Trying to function with a sleep-deprived brain is not easy.

This documentary investigates some of the causes of sleep issues while a group with sleep problems seek help from a specialist research centre. And that, of course, involves the ghostly night-vision footage that always gives me nightmares.

Summary

An investigation into the problem of sleeplessness in the UK, which regularly affects about one in every three people. It is having a dramatic impact on the nation's health, with some experts describing it as a public health crisis. Ranvir Singh narrates this programme which explores the reasons behind this trend and also investigates how a lack of sleep can affect the body.
