Review

Livia Simoka’s visit to the Mbendjele tribe in the Congolese rainforest comes to an end, and once again it’s so impressive how deeply embedded in the local culture she is. She’s alert to the big picture of a government plan to cut through the trees and build a road, the ramifications of which the self-sufficient Mbendjele may not quite appreciate. It’d be easy for that section to come across as a white saviour wringing her hands, but Simoka’s too considerate an observer for that.

Similarly, a local saga surrounding a charming young man who enjoys polygamy – his wives enjoy it rather less – could be played for judgmental laughs. Instead, the nuances of the situation are allowed to play out and become gripping drama.

Summary

Livia Simoka travels to the remote jungles of the Republic of the Congo to live with pygmy tribe the Mbendjele, who are almost entirely cut off from the world.
