Inside the Ritz Hotel

Review

“Documentary series” is far too grand and sober a description for this peek behind the curtains at yet another luxury hotel (hot on the heels of Claridges, the Corinthia and Cliveden). Perhaps “enormous ball of fluff” will do.

No glimpse of unreachable opulence is spared as cameras roam the corridors and dining rooms of The Ritz hotel in Piccadilly, London. We accompany regular guest, actor Richard E Grant, to a signature suite that has its own butler. And we hear from US Vogue supremo Anna Wintour (wearing her trademark sunglasses indoors, of course) who never stays anywhere else when she’s in Britain.

Afternoon tea in the hotel’s Palm Court is big business – demand is so high that there are five sittings and “afternoon” is an elastic concept embracing “breakfast”, “lunch” and “dinner”. Watching the chefs cut sandwiches into perfect rectangles is fascinating.
