Apollo's Moon Shot

Into the Void

Series 1 - Episode 3 Into the Void

One of many things we glean from this gripping series is how rushed the Apollo programme was. Nasa was so set on both beating the Soviets to the moon and getting there before 1970 that the pace of missions and test flights was frenetic.

“They came in such a Gatling gun sequence,” says one contributor here, with a fresh mission achieving something unprecedented – lunar orbit, lunar module flight – every few months.

The programme whisks us through Apollo missions 7, 8 and 9 but pauses to take in lovely techno-detail, like the fact that they navigated through space the same way mariners had navigated the oceans for centuries: with a sextant.

Nasa Apollo missions were intended to land Americans on the moon and bring them safely back to Earth, but not all were a success. This is the story of three critical missions in 1968 and 1969.
