One-year-old ridgeback Loki has always been lame because of a developmental disease in the ankle joint of one of his back legs. His owner opts for surgery to treat the problem, but just as challenging as the operation is the lengthy recuperation period. Loki is much too boisterous to take such a thing lying down.

Also needing Noel’s help is gentle giant Hugo, a newfoundland who acts as a therapy dog for Dominic, a young boy who has autism. Unfortunately Hugo not only has hip dysplasia but, Noel discovers, other problems, too. “That’s not good,” he says grimly. “We have some big decisions to make.”

Noel diagnoses the joint condition osteochondritis dissecans in a hyperactive ridgeback named Loki, and discusses treatment options with his owners. Newfoundland Hugo is referred for his hip dysplasia, but Noel discovers issues with his elbow and knee joints, while Carol and Nigel bring their mischievous seven-month-old Havana kitten Zahra following a mysterious accident at home, which resulted in a broken leg.
