Review

Granny Muriel is the big, beating heart of this astonishing, heart-crushing drama and she has a fine moment as she addresses, with piercing directness and a forensic eye, what’s gone wrong with society. It’s all down to automated supermarket checkouts.

In a brilliant little take-down of consumer selfishness Muriel (the truly great Anne Reid) holds forth about our lack of humanity, our inability to offer the simplest kindness to other people (such as being unable to look a real checkout operator in the eye with even passing friendliness) and our utter selfishness.

But maybe it’s too late. In 2029, the world is in meltdown, the BBC has closed, monkey flu is sweeping the globe and thousands upon thousands of homeless and displaced people are in peril from the hideous Viv Rook (Emma Thompson).

In a superb, profound final episode writer Russell T Davies shows us what it means to be human. It’s extraordinary.

Summary

As Viv Rook's regime tightens its grip, the entire Lyons family is forced to take action. Spurred on by both Muriel and Daniel, Rosie faces up to the troops surrounding her home, and takes radical action with Lincoln's help. But when Bethany reveals the shocking truth about her father, Edith and Celeste form a secret alliance to stop him. Stephen's in too deep as the mysterious Erstwhile Policy turns deadly, forcing Edith and her girlfriend Fran to embark on a reckless, dangerous mission for Viktor's sake. Last in the series.
