For the second season running, the Premier League returns with a solitary fixture on Friday night. As with any new development in football, this is driven by TV companies rather than fans and has been criticised accordingly, although a year ago everyone forgot about all that when Arsenal 4-3 Leicester City turned out to be such a heady romp.
Leicester are the away team again tonight, but another seven-goal slugfest seems unlikely: the Foxes have lost their best creative player, Riyad Mahrez, in the summer transfer window, and tonight they visit Manchester United, who were a stodgy muddle last season. Even a dour 1-0, though, won’t take the shine off the Premier League circus coming back to town.
Manchester United v Leicester City (Kick-off 8.00pm). Coverage of the opening match of the season, which takes place at Old Trafford. Despite a second-placed finish last term, the Red Devils know they have some ground to make up on rivals Manchester City, who finished 19 points ahead of them as they won the league. Manager Jose Mourinho has elected not to overhaul his squad, and will instead look for more consistency from the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
