Review

It’s the last of this funny, life-enhancing series, and I’m sure there will plenty of people like me hoping against hope BBC2 will cast its hook for another. I’m not sure why Bob and Paul’s gently comic tales from the riverbank haven’t found a wider audience (about three quarters of a million – not bad) but those of us watching are loving it.

The final outing is in theory a let-down – no fish are caught at any point, though there’s a splash and flurry when Bob gets a carp interested for a brief moment. But the incidental pleasures are always there: a cardiologist pays them a visit, so Bob asks him, “And I’ll live how much longer than Paul? Would you say months or years?”

Summary

In the final episode, Paul and Bob fish for Pike on the River Test in Hampshire, which may not be the best idea for two men of a certain age with heart problems. In the cottage where the pair are staying, they decide to invite a consultant cardiologist for dinner to talk about their medical past and their future, gaining tips on how to live the most healthy life possible. As the sun sets on the final night of their fishing expedition, Paul and Bob decide to write a eulogy for each on the riverbank.
