Anyone who knows my love for this roaringly informative show can imagine the grief when no preview was ready for the first of a new series. Still, we know what we’ll get: Gregg Wallace acting like a barrow-boy Brian Blessed on the production line while Cherry Healey and Ruth Goodman scour the world for facts.

In this episode we’re at a coffee factory in Derbyshire: Gregg finds out how beans from Brazil are turned into 175,000 jars of instant granules each day. Cherry discovers how coffee affects our brains and Ruth learns the role that the British passion for coffee had in the founding of institutions such as the London Stock Exchange, auction houses and newspapers.

Gregg Wallace explores an enormous Derbyshire coffee factory, where they produce 175,000 jars of instant coffee a day. He follows the production of freeze dried instant coffee, from the arrival of 27 tonnes of Brazilian green coffee beans right through to dispatch. Meanwhile, Cherry Healey learns about the drink's chemistry and Ruth Goodman investigates its origins, visiting the site of the UK's very first coffee house which sprang up in a London churchyard in 1652.
