It’s an all-London showdown at Wembley as Arsenal and Chelsea contest the Women’s FA Cup final. The Blues have in their ranks one of England’s biggest stars in striker Fran Kirby; it’s been her goals that have kept Chelsea top of the league and targeting silverware today.
The Gunners, meanwhile, have been a bright contrast to the malaise of the men’s team this year. Goals from Danielle Carter and Louise Quinn in the semi-final give the side yet another chance to add to their FA Cup record – they’ve won the tournament 14 times, more than any other side.
The FA’s 2018 report on the growth of the women’s game claimed that it had “already far exceeded” its viewing figure targets for this year, with a peak audience of 994,000 tuning in for the BBC’s Women’s Football Show. Primetime women’s football is here to stay.
Summary
Arsenal Women v Chelsea Ladies (Kick-off 5.30pm). Coverage of the final, which takes place at Wembley Stadium, as the successors to Manchester City Women are crowned. Fourteen-time winners Arsenal overcame Everton Ladies 2-1 in their semi-final, while Chelsea defeated the holders 2-0. This match is a repeat of the 2016 fixture, in which the Gunners emerged victorious 1-0 thanks to Danielle Carter's early strike.
