Review

Among the duties of Leading Seaman Dani Hobbs is to train the crews who fire HMS Queen Elizabeth’s machine guns. Her other notable duty is as lead singer of the ship’s rock band, performing covers of Seven Nation Army and You Really Got Me to well-refreshed sailors. Her role and those of other women is assessed in the final part of Chris Terrill’s affectionate profile of the new aircraft carrier.

First Lieutenant Bob Hawkins has his doubts; he doesn’t quite believe in the principle of taking women to war, though he values their “courage, skill and commitment”. It seems an emotional subject for him to talk about — and later we learn why.

Summary

The crew of HMS Queen Elizabeth completes the vessel's sea trials, testing an innovative new firefighting system for the first time and marking the 100th anniversary of a plane being successfully landed on a moving ship. The carrier returns to Portsmouth, which will be its home port for the next 50 years, while the pilots of its fighter jets go to the US for additional training.
