Serenity can be in short supply in hospital-set docs, but there’s plenty on show tonight. Rose, 26, and Darren, 31, are having their second baby; their first was stillborn. Darren is stoutly phlegmatic – even when Rose had a stroke, just weeks before her due date.

And for Chynna, 21 – expecting her second child with boyfriend Spencer, also 21 – mum Jacqui is a tangibly calming presence, as well as an inspiration: Chynna is attempting to balance university and parenting, something Jacqui also did, in her 30s.

Then there are the midwives, unfailingly unruffled, exemplified in Sozan. She fled Iraq with her family when she was eight, so feels an affinity with Sudan-born Halah, 31, and Seif, 48, expecting a daughter.

Summary

Young couple Chynna and Spencer, who are both 21, arrive expecting their second child together, with Chynna's mother on hand to help them through the labour. Meanwhile, Seif, who fled the war in Sudan 15 years ago, and his partner Halah are desperate to start a family together, and anxiously await the arrival of their new baby after tragically losing their first child six months into the pregnancy.
