Review

In 1845, two Royal Navy vessels, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, set off in search of the Northwest Passage, but the expedition failed and the crews perished. This much is true. Now Ridley Scott and others have adapted Dan Simmons’s 2007 fantasy novel, which imagines the expedition’s fate.

A sense of dread permeates the first episode of the opening double bill, with tensions among the officers and “accidents” to the men. The cast is sterling – Ciarán Hinds as commander Sir John Franklin, Tobias Menzies as his number two Fitzjames and Jared Harris as the Terror’s captain Crozier – and it looks impressive, too; one shot of the ships marooned in a desert of ice is literally chilling.
