Review

This gentle portrait of Britain’s future Queen Consort from Jane Treays (The Queen’s Green Planet) allows us to peek into the life of a woman who’s relatively little known, considering for how long she was at the eye of a storm that rocked the monarchy.

But Camilla seems a good egg with a kind heart, and is clearly adored by her husband who routinely refers to her, rather sweetly, as “my darling wife”. He’s obviously lost in admiration at her ease and happiness: “She’s the best listener in town. She can get anything out of anybody.”

Treays and her cameras follow Camilla and Prince Charles on an official visit to Italy, and to more informal events, including a charity tea dance where the couple do a hesitant jive to a crooning Elvis impersonator.

Friends including Joanna Lumley and Gyles Brandreth (“Camilla isn’t interested in position or status”) contribute.

Summary

Amanda Redman narrates a documentary following a year in the life of the Duchess of Cornwall, with family members, friends and the people who know her best talking candidly about a woman who might one day be queen. Over the course of the 12 months, cameras capture her helping decorate the Christmas tree at Clarence House, taking the dogs for a walk in Scotland and going on a whirlwind tour of Italy, while there is also a look at her UK-based charity work.
