Give It a Year

Series 1 - Episode 1

Review

“There’s a really fine line between enthusiasm and delusion,” Karren Brady tells a gung-ho inventor called Thomas who hopes to market a mug that keeps hot drinks at the perfect temperature. The price is overheated at £70 for the basic model and, unbelievably, £1000 for the deluxe version.

The idea of the show is that Brady meets entrepreneurs as they start out, then revisits a year later to see if their business has reached lift-off.

Thomas remains untroubled by modesty: “What I’ve created, I think will go down in history.”

Also running a start-up is Sarah, whose idea for light-up letters for weddings looks plausible – until she starts talking about the business advice she took from a psychic.

Summary

Karren Brady meets a host of people who have decided to go it alone and start a new business, starting at the launch of each venture's first year, before revisiting them 12 months later to discover what can happen when they Give it a Year. In the opening episode, Karren meets a young woman from Essex whose lack of confidence has led her to seek advice for her fledgling wedding business from beyond the grave and the inventor who thinks he's cracked a very British problem - how to keep your tea warm.
